ABOUT
The Artist
My name is Andrew J. Jones. I am an artist who currently resides in Virginia, USA. I received my Bachelors of Fine Arts within the Painting & Drawing Concentration from Longwood University in 2020.
The Art
Art x AJ is a collection of artworks that is meant to showcase and emphasize the beauty, strength, and resilience of black people in a world that is constantly trying to tear them down. With my art, I aim to create positive images of black people as a means of empowering them and highlighting the features that make us unique and beautiful people on this Earth. I create varied original works as well specific bodies of work that highlight poignant and relevant issues. If I were to describe the nature of my art, it would be described in three words: inspiring, unapologetic, and black.
Technique

5th Annual Liberated Flow Charity Art Gala, 2024.
For the paintings I make, I strive to use a brighter, more vibrant color palette. I choose to do this as a means of challenging common color associations that have been made throughout history (e.g. black = evil, white = good, etc.) It has been my experience that specific colors do not always reflect their given associations, and in actuality cause more harm than good. Such color associations adds more fuel to issues such as racism and colorism. By rejecting common color associations, I aim to bring forth the realization that colors are not inherently good, bad, or otherwise, but rather it is we as people who choose what they mean. And just as we determine what they mean, we in turn have the power to change said meanings as we see fit.
